At Dream Catchers, we know that raising strong, confident kids goes beyond emotional support — it’s about nurturing their bodies, too. To give parents more insight into children’s physical well-being, we spoke with Dr. Elizabeth Smolick, DC, CACCP, a certified pediatric, prenatal, and family chiropractor. She and her husband, Dr. Nathaniel Reese, run Life in Motion Chiropractic Center in Canonsburg, PA, where they specialize in helping kids and families thrive through nervous-system-based chiropractic care. In 2023, Dr Abigail Peters joined them in practice to be able to help more families in their community.
Here’s our conversation with Dr. Beth about common concerns, trends, and what parents can do to help their kids grow healthy and strong.
What are some of the most common issues you see in kids?
Dr. Beth: Children often struggle with ear infections, allergies, constipation, and posture-related challenges. We also see sports injuries and spinal alignment issues that affect how their bodies function every day.
Do you see any clear trends that are impacting kids’ health?
Dr. Beth: YES!!! Technology is a big one. We’re seeing changes in kids’ posture because of screen use — things like forward head carriage and “text neck.” It doesn’t just change how they look; it impacts balance, coordination, and even emotional health.
At what age should parents start thinking about their child’s spinal health?
Dr. Beth: Honestly, before birth. Prenatal chiropractic can support moms during pregnancy and help set the stage for a baby’s health. And once a child is born, gentle care can benefit them right away.
What role does chiropractic care play in kids’ development?
Dr. Beth: It’s not just about pain — it’s about function. If something in the spine is misaligned, it can affect the nervous system, which controls everything in the body. That can show up as trouble sleeping, digestive issues, mood swings, anxiety, or even difficulty focusing in school. Chiropractic care helps the body function better overall.
How does sports participation affect kids’ growing bodies?
Dr. Beth: Specializing in one sport too early can cause repetitive stress injuries. Kids need a variety of movement to balance their bodies. Cross-training or playing multiple sports helps prevent overuse injuries and gives them a stronger foundation.
How important is posture for kids, beyond just looking confident?
Dr. Beth: A LOT! Posture affects so much more than appearances. When kids practice what I call their “inner winner” posture, it impacts their confidence, their focus, and even their physical well-being. Body language really does shape how they feel.
Are there daily habits parents can encourage for healthier posture?
Dr. Beth: Yes — small things make a big difference.
- 20 minutes of reading or screen time laying on belly (rather than a hunched posture)
- Encourage “inner winner” posture
- Make sure they’re moving more than they’re sitting
And don’t forget backpacks — worn the wrong way or overloaded, they can create a lot of stress on the spine.
Do stress and emotions play a role in kids’ physical health?
Dr. Beth: Definitely. Humans hold emotions in our bodies, and kids are no different. Stress can cause tension and even physical symptoms. Chiropractic care helps the body release that stress so kids can feel more balanced.
For parents who aren’t sure where to start, what’s your advice?
Dr. Beth: Start with a posture assessment. It’s a simple first step to see how your child’s body is functioning and whether chiropractic care could help.
At the end of the day, every parent wants their child to feel strong, balanced, and confident as they grow. Dr. Beth reminds us that supporting kids’ well-being goes far beyond fixing aches and pains—it’s about helping their bodies function at their best so they can thrive in school, sports, and everyday life. Whether it’s encouraging more movement, limiting screen time, or exploring gentle chiropractic care, small changes can make a big difference. We’re so grateful to Dr. Beth for sharing her expertise and passion for children’s health, and we hope her insight empowers you to take the next step in supporting your child’s development.
Dr. Beth says, “Parents don’t have to wait for a crisis. Supporting your child’s spine and nervous system early on can set them up for a healthier, happier future.”
